Vitamin D may fight Disease

Supplementation with vitamin D3 can prevent acute respiratory tract infections.

Supplementation may be most effective in people who take vitamin D3 supplements on  daily or weekly basis and have low vitamin D levels to begin with.

It has been established that vitamin D modulates ongoing abnormal immune responses in chronic respiratory diseases and is shown to restrict bacterial and viral colonization into the lungs.

Specifically in respiratory health, vitamin D deficiency has been shown to

  1. increase the risk of upper respiratory tract infections and tuberculosis
  2. and to decrease the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) in asthma and wheezing diseases.
