Role of Prolactin in Milk Secretion

Prolactin levels during the initial 10 days of lactation have an
  • average baseline of approximately 200 mg/dL
  • with further increases to peak levels (400 ng/dL) after suckling .
Baseline and peak levels subsequently decrease over  duration of lactation.
Milk yield is not directly correlated to prolactin levels.
Prolactin is necessary for  secretion of milk by the cells of  alveoli.
  1. The level of prolactin in blood increases markedly during pregnancy,
  2. and stimulates the growth and development of  mammary tissue,
  3. in preparation for  production of milk.
