Women with severe morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum) have higher HCG levels than other pregnant women do. Women pregnant with twins or multiples also have higher HCG levels and are more likely to experience morning sickness.
- Morning sickness does not hurt the baby in any way unless you lose weight, such as with severe vomiting.
- Mild weight loss during the first trimester is not uncommon when women have moderate symptoms, and is not harmful to baby.
Severe morning sickness is when nausea and vomiting get so serious that a pregnant woman
- vomits several times a day,
- loses weight,
- gets dehydrated
- is at risk for dehydration.
If this rare pregnancy-related condition isn’t treated, it can affect a woman’s health and her baby’s ability to thrive.
